What hand do you wear a wedding ring on? (And does it really matter?)
Ah, the wedding ring. That small, shiny circle that means so much. Love, loyalty, endless dishes together… But as soon as you say "I do," that one practical question often arises: which hand do you actually wear your wedding ring on?
Left or right – what's the point?
In the Netherlands, it's customary to wear your wedding ring on your right hand . But if you live in Belgium, France, or the United States, the left hand is the standard. Confusing? A bit. But there's good news: there's no universal rule . It just depends on where you live, what you believe, or—quite simply—what you prefer.
How does that work historically?
People once believed that a "vena amoris" (Latin for "vein of love") ran from your left ring finger directly to your heart . Romantic, right? That's why the ring was often worn on the left. Later, certain religions or countries developed their own traditions and rules, making it quite common to wear it on the right as well.
And what do people do now?
- In the Netherlands: usually right .
- In Belgium: often left , except in some regions.
- Catholic or Protestant: that can also make a difference (for example, right-wing for Protestants, left-wing for Catholics – or the other way around, depending on the region).
- In Islamic tradition : there is no set religious rule, but many Muslims wear their wedding ring on their right hand . Some choose the left, often for practical reasons or personal preference. Islam is primarily about intention (niyyah), not the hand.
- In Judaism : During the wedding ceremony, the ring is often worn on the right index finger (yes, really!), but after the wedding, it is usually worn on the left ring finger .
- In Hinduism : At Hindu weddings, women often wear their rings on their right hand , as it is considered purer. Men, on the other hand, wear theirs on their left – although this varies by region and tradition.
- And some people? They simply choose the hand where the ring fits most comfortably or gets in the way the least while typing.

What about engagement rings?
That's also a fun fact: an engagement ring is usually worn on the left hand . After the wedding, some people switch to the right hand, or they wear both rings on the same hand. Anything goes, nothing is required.
So…what should you do?
In short: whatever you want . You can stick to tradition, follow family customs, or simply choose whatever feels most comfortable for you. The important thing isn't which hand the ring is on, but what it means to you.
And if someone asks why you wear it on your left while 'everyone' wears it on their right, you can always say:
"My heart is on the left. So is my ring."
